In the Pioneer Valley town of Wendell, population 900, activists are fighting a plan to install a giant battery and 8,000 solar panels, all in one place. One of the activists is Linda Hickman. She told the Valley Post, “Our fire chief said he would need 1,000 gallons of water a minute to protect the solar array and woods at the same time if the battery system caused a fire. We have neither the tanker capacity nor water sources to meet this.”

The activists have a web site at https://NABunited.org. According to that web site, “Located in the headwaters of a pristine wetland of unique importance, the site lies over an aquifer that has been identified as 'the most promising municipal groundwater supply for the town.' The area has been a conservation priority in successive Wendell Open Space and Recreation Plans spanning decades.”

The solar panels can go on the roofs of supermarkets instead.
