Civil Disobedience Planned

Activists in Brattleboro are planning to use civil disobedience to protest TD Bank, which is funding the Dakota Access Pipeline to move oil, which causes climate change. The action is set for February 22 at 3:30 p.m. at the TD Bank at 215 Main Street in Brattleboro. The activists are asking people to come and support them, without risking arrest. The Brattleboro chapter of is promoting the event.

On February 25 in Keene, there will be a rally in support of universal healthcare and against cuts to existing government programs that help poor and working class people afford healthcare. The rally starts at 1 p.m. at 44 Central Square.

On February 17 in Brattleboro, about 100 people attended a rally outside the public high school to protest President Trump's education secretary, Betsy DeVos. She was opposed by Democrats in Congress who said she would cut funding for public schools. The rally was organized by Lucia Morey, a student at the Brattleboro high school.

As of 2015, Eduardo Melendez was a teacher at Holyoke public schools, a position he had held for 20 years. Melendez provided a link to the Valley Post to a 2014 report by Bill Moyers that said, "Public education from kindergarten through high school pulls in more than $500 billion in taxpayer revenues every year, and crony capitalists and politicians alike are cashing in" by converting public schools to for-profit, publicly-funded "charter schools."
