Blues Concert Review

Luther Johnson and the Magic Rockers performed an excellent, public concert in Northampton on July 25. The Iron Horse Music Hall appeared to be almost sold out. The audience applauded enthusiastically after all the songs. Johnson sang, "She said, 'Luther, you don't have to be a superstar, I love you just the way you are.'"

A highlight was Johnson's version of the Jeannie Cheatham song "Meet Me With Your Black Drawers On."

Johnson, who is also known as Guitar Junior, was born in 1939 in Itta Bena, Mississippi. Johnson worked as guitarist and singer in Muddy Waters’s band for six years, starting in 1973. The Rolling Stones, and Rolling Stone magazine, were named after a Muddy Waters song.

Johnson performed in some of the world’s leading concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York City. He appeared in the movie The Blues Brothers. His CDs are available at local record stores like Turn It Up, and on Amazon.

The members of the band on July 25 appeared to be the same as those in the video, except the trumpet player in the video was replaced by a harmonica player.
