Valley Nuke Protesters Arrested; Rally Is Sept. 12

On August 30, protesters were arrested for non-violent civil disobedience at the gates of the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant. Activists are asking the public to attend a rally on September 12 outside the federal court in Brattleboro, the location of a trial that will likely decide whether Vermont Yankee will operate until March 2012 or until 2032. The reactor is three miles from Massachusetts and a stone’s throw from New Hampshire.

Claire Chang is a spokeswoman for www.NukeBusters.org

She said the September 12 rally will begin at 7:30 a.m. and end at 9 a.m. on the sidewalk in front of the post office on Main Street in downtown Brattleboro. The courtroom is upstairs from the post office. The public is allowed to attend the trial, which is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. with a one hour lunch break. The trial will start on September 12 and is likely to continue for several days.

Chang said that, on August 30, six women were arrested for non-violent civil disobedience at the gates of Vermont Yankee (VY). The protesters were Frances Crowe, Nancy First, and Paki Wieland, all from of Northampton; Hattie Nestel of Athol, Massachusetts; Ellen Graves of West Springfield, Massachusetts; and Betsy Corner of Colrain, Massachusetts. They held a banner that said, “VY Pollutes All / Shut It Down.”
