Last year, a Massachusetts state employee failed to show up for eight appointments with a four-year-old boy whose survival the employee was responsible for. The boy died. His name was Jeremiah Oliver. The employee and her bosses were fired. On May 18 in Greenfield, dozens of people attended a rally to try to prevent more children from dying due to inadequate state funding of the agency responsible for caring for orphans. The group that organized the rally has a web site at www.seiu509.org.

Funding to hire more workers could come from raising taxes on millionaires. In 2011, there were 11,557 Massachusetts residents who made over $1 million a year, according to the state tax department.
