3,300 Nurses To Go On Strike

About 3,300 nurses will go on strike June 27 in Boston. They are asking the public to join them at a rally on June 26 at 4 p.m., and on the picket lines starting June 27 at 7 a.m. Buses from Springfield to Boston leave every two hours and take about an hour and 40 minutes. One-way fares start at $16. Details are at www.greyhound.com. From the Boston bus station to the rally takes about 12 minutes by subway; to the picket line is about 30 minutes by subway. The fare is $2.10.

The nurses want fewer patients per nurse, to improve health care. They also want higher wages. The nurses have a web site at www.MassNurses.org.

The nurses work at Brigham and Women's Hospital, which is owned by Partners HealthCare Corporation. The CEO makes about $2.6 million a year.

The rally will be at 180 Mount Vernon Street in Boston. The picket line will be at 75 Francis Street in Boston. Both will be cancelled if the contract is settled; check the nurses' web site.

On average, workers in the USA make 27 percent higher wages when they join a union. That's according to www.bls.gov. Most union contracts say workers can only be fired for "just cause." Non-union workers can be fired at any time for no reason.

Millions of workers in the USA are union members, including all the workers at UPS, Stop & Shop, and the food co-ops in Northampton, Greenfield, Shelburne Falls, and Brattleboro.
