More than 80 people took part in car rallies in Holyoke and Springfield on May 1. The same day in Brattleboro about 50 people took part in a car rally. The rallies were for workers' rights. The Massachusetts rallies were organized by the Pioneer Valley Workers' Center. The Brattleboro rally was organized by the Vermont Workers' Center.

In the USA, CEOs make on average 278 times the average worker's wage. So if a worker at McDonald's was making $15 an hour, the CEO would be making $4,170 an hour. In Spain some workers decided no one can work 278 times harder, or be 278 times smarter, than anyone else. So they formed the Mondragon cooperatives. Today they employ 81,000 people. They make fridges, scaffolding for construction, and other goods and services. The workers own and run Mondragon. The highest paid worker-owner makes nine times more money than the lowest paid worker-owner.

Worker-owned and worker-run businesses in the Valley include Collective Copies in Amherst and Northampton, and Chroma Technology in Bellows Falls, Vermont, near Brattleboro. Chroma has more than 200 worker-owners. They make filters for microscopes and similar devices.

On average, workers in the USA make 27 percent higher wages when they join a union. That's according to www.bls.gov.

In Springfield on April 28, leaders of the Catholic church signed an agreement with prosecutors. The deal was to address widespread sexual abuse of children by priests. It was signed by Catholic leaders and the district attorneys for Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin counties.
