A Full Court for Peace; A Forest Saved

In Northampton on December 18, civil disobedience was on trial in front of a courtroom that was full to capacity with supporters of peace. Israel's USA-funded genocide in Gaza was the background. Four people were arrested in Northampton last winter for refusing to leave the office of L3 Harris, a corporation that profits from war.

The defendants are Patricia Gallagher, Priscilla Lynch, Nick Mottern and Paki Wieland. On December 19, Jaime Rogers told the Valley Post there were errors in the Gazette's December 18 news article about the trial. Rogers is the Northampton lawyer for the peace protesters.

Rogers said, “Paki is the correct spelling of her first name. The action was not only related to an arrest warrant for the CEO, but was also for the purpose of delivering a message to all executives and workers at L3Harris, as well as to the community generally. The charges were originally criminal, then later converted to civil. Jaime is the correct spelling of my first name.”

The judge will issue her ruling at a date to-be-determined. Wieland is part of a group that has a web site at www.CodePink.org.

In Brattleboro, environmentalists are celebrating a victory. Despite the efforts of Republican governors of Vermont since 2004 to zero out funding for protecting forests and farmland from development, the state helped a land trust save 341 acres of forest in the county that's home to Brattleboro. Vermont Land Trust announced the deal on December 11. The land is in the towns of Athens and Townshend. The USA is losing 6,000 acres of open space to development every day.

On December 19, Brattleboro town manager John Potter replied to an email from the Valley Post asking to verify reports that the boss of the people who answer 911 calls for the town, Henry Scott, was recently arrested for punching an unidentified female member of his family, among other crimes. Potter said, "I don't comment on confidential personnel matters." Details are at:
