15,000 Take to the Valley's Streets

In the Valley in the past few weeks, thousands more people marched than earlier reported. They were protesting racist white police officers who kill unarmed African Americans. On June 5, the Valley Post reported that “at least 5,000 people” had marched in the Valley. That estimate did not include 3,000 or so people who marched in Springfield on June 3. More information about who organized the local marches, and their specific demands, is at:

In Northampton on June 6, around 5,000 people attended a rally outside the police station for the same cause. The rally was organized by Black Trans Lives Matter.

On June 6 in Greenfield 2,000 or so people marched. The Greenfield march was organized by Brieanna Arsenault and Autumn Upham.

In Keene on June 13 at 5:30 p.m. there will be a rally about this issue at Central Square. Details are at:

A five megawatt facility proposed for Brattleboro would convert trees to electricity. This would be worse for climate change than a coal power plant. Chris Matera said, “A 5 megawatt wood biomass burning facility, which would emit more than 50,000 tons of CO2 per year, would burn the wood equivalent of more than 50,000 fifty year old trees, each year, which is the exact opposite of what we need to do during this climate crisis.” Matera lives in Northampton and was the main subject of a New York Times article about logging. He runs a group that has a web site at www.MAforests.org.
