Washington Judge: Valley Protesters Innocent

Four Valley residents were found not guilty of “unlawful assembly” in a Washington, DC court room on June 16. They were arrested with 21 other people for protesting torture at the U.S. capitol building in January.

Judge Russell Canan freed the arrested protesters.

The non-violent protest was organized by the group Witness Against Torture www.witnesstorture.org

The group formed in 2005 when 25 Americans went to Guantánamo Bay, Cuba and tried to visit the U.S. prison there. In 2008, some 80 members of Witness Against Torture were arrested at the U.S. Supreme Court building for non-violent civil disobedience.

The protesters’ lawyer, Bill Quigley, said on June 16 that Judge Canan “validate[d] the spirit of the protestors, and their struggle against the injustice of Guantanamo.”

Arrested in January were Patricia Wieland of Northampton, Elizabeth Adams of Leverett, Sherrill Hogen of Conway and Ellen Graves of West Springfield.
