In Northampton on June 4, dozens of people protested a plan by President Trump and the Republican-controlled congress to eliminate health insurance for poor people. The activists staged a so-called “die in” to bring attention to the fact that thousands of people will die if the Republicans' plan is approved.
According to an article that appeared in the Washington Post on May 7, 2017, “A 2009 study in the American Journal of Public Health found that 45,000 deaths annually were linked to lack of health coverage.”
The Northampton protest was held downtown in Pulaski Park. It was organized by Lindsay Sabadosa. “Healthcare is a human right,” she said. For more information, contact Sabadosa via www.PioneerValleyWomensMarch.org.
In other news from the Valley, on June 6, Vermont's Republican governor, Phil Scott, vetoed the state budget, which had been approved by the Democrat-controlled state legislature. Scott feels that public school teachers' health insurance is too good. The teachers' union will hold a rally in Brattleboro on June 7 at 4:30 p.m. The teachers want the state legislature to over-ride the governor's veto. The rally will be at the corner of Main and High streets. Thirty people had RSVP'd via Facebook when this article was published. The public is invited. More information is at:
