In Brattleboro on June 24, hundreds of people were at a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new train station. “Between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expected to cause approximately 250,000 additional deaths per year,” according to a 2023 United Nations report. The web site of the US-based group the High Speed Rail Alliance says, “Trains are, hands down, the best way to cut carbon emissions...”

Westhampton, Massachusetts borders Northampton. In Westhampton on June 25, the town announced it had saved 806 acres of forest within walking distance from downtown. Four land trusts helped make this happen. The US loses 6,000 acres of open space to development every day.
